With 17 ensuite bedrooms, expansive gathering spaces, direct beach access and wide-open views from ocean to sound, this pet-friendly 4x4 beach home is well suited for extended families and groups of friends who want to spend time together without feeling crowded.
The setting is what makes The Lucky Penny especially memorable. There are no houses or structures between the home and the Atlantic to the east or Currituck Sound to the west, giving you sunrise over the ocean, sunset over the sound, and beautiful coastal views throughout the day. Neighboring homes are visible in the distance, but the 10-acre properties of Swan Island Estates create a sense of space and privacy that is difficult to find elsewhere on the Outer Banks.
Wild horses are a regular part of the experience here. They frequently graze near the front of the house and often make their way along the dunes on the ocean side of the property - one of those distinctly Corolla moments that never really gets old.
Inside, the top floor is the heart of the home. A wall of windows fills the spacious great room with ocean views, while multiple seating and dining areas give the whole group room to gather comfortably. The large kitchen is designed for feeding a crowd, with two refrigerators, two dishwashers, three ovens, two cooktops, a mini fridge / wine cooler and generous counter space for multiple cooks.
Seventeen ensuite bedrooms are spread across three levels, giving guests the privacy of their own space even when traveling with a large group. Multiple common areas throughout the house make it easy for smaller groups to break away before everyone comes back together.
For downtime, the theater room features tiered seating and a 4K laser projector, while the ground-floor rec room offers a pool table and card table. Outside, the private pool, poolside cabana and two full-size hot tubs provide plenty of ways to relax.
A private walkway / path used only by The Lucky Penny and its guests facilitates crossing the dune directly to the beach, making it easy to move between the house, pool and ocean throughout the day. Because rental homes are widely spaced (and The Lucky Penny is the only rental home in the Swan Island Estates subdivision), there are times when the stretch of beach in front of the house can feel almost entirely your own.
The Lucky Penny is a big house, but what guests tend to remember most is the space around it: open views, wild horses, quiet stretches of beach and the feeling that, for a week, you have found your own corner of the Outer Banks.

At the northern end of Highway 12, where the pavement ends and the sand begins, the 4x4 beaches are one of the most remote and unspoiled stretches of the Outer Banks — home to wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs and miles of undeveloped coastline.

On the north side of the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge, there are a few prestigious homes in Swan Island Estates. These homes are located just south of North Swan Beach, approximately 5.9 miles from the access ramp.
