4x4 Beaches
Wide beaches, wild homes, and vacation homes for every type of trip.
Welcome to 4x4 Beaches of the Outer Banks
At the northern end of Highway 12, where the pavement ends and the sand begins, Outer Banks vacationers can enjoy an exclusively rare perspective. A place where you can drive on the beach between the sand dunes and the shoreline and view wild horses playing in the surf, the 4x4 Beaches offer an unforgettable experience you won’t find anywhere else.
What makes the 4x4 beaches unique
Wild Horses
Wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs roam freely throughout the area, often seen along the shoreline, in the dunes, or even near homes. It’s one of the most recognizable and unique experiences on the Outer Banks.

The drive itself is part of the experience. Getting to your house means driving on the sand, with the ocean on one side and dunes on the other.

Accessible by bike or on foot, this protected area extends into Virginia and offers an even more remote, untouched stretch of coastline.
Why guests keep coming back
The beach is the road
Getting here requires a 4WD vehicle, and the drive happens right on the sand. It’s part of the experience from the start.
Wild and unspoiled
Wild horses roam freely, and with very little development, it feels raw and untamed, unlike anywhere else on the Outer Banks.
Life happens on the beach
Days here often spill out onto the sand, with trucks parked by the water, fishing lines in the surf, and groups set up for the day.
Plan ahead, then settle in
There are no stores or restaurants nearby, so guests come prepared and spend most of their time at the house or on the beach.
Best for getting away from it all
A strong fit if you’re looking for a more secluded, casual stay, with everything from high-end homes to simpler beach houses, all in a rugged and remote setting.
Local favorites & hidden gems
Watching for horses at sunrise or dusk
They’re around all day, but early morning and evening tend to be the best times to spot them moving along the beach or through the dunes.
Setting up on the beach for the day
Unlike other towns, it’s common to drive out, park near the water, and stay put for hours. Fishing, music, and time outside become the focus.
Exploring by vehicle instead of on foot
Getting around means driving, whether it’s heading to a different stretch of beach or just seeing what’s further up the coast.
Fishing straight from the shoreline
No pier needed. Many visitors bring gear and fish right from where they’ve set up for the day.
Stargazing at night
With very little development and minimal light, the night sky is noticeably clearer than in other parts of the Outer Banks.
